TFS Starting Grant – Call 2026

The 7th call in the TFS Starting Grant programme is out June 2025.

TFS’s sister foundation in Bergen – the Trond Mohn Research Foundation (TMF) – has decided to implement a separate UiT-initiative to support high-quality research projects at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. TMF has invited TFS to prepare award cases for projects with UiT as the host institution.

The program is open to all departments and faculties/units at UiT, aiming to recruit young national or international candidates with outstanding academic merit and research potential.

  • The duration of the individual project can be up to 6 years
  • You can apply for up to NOK 12 million kroner
  • Any TMF contribution has to be matched by resources from UiT at about the same level
  • The prequalification application deadline is December 1st, 2025 (not February 2026)

The application process contains two steps; Prequalification (stage 1) and final round (stage 2).

Announcement of TFS Starting Grant Call 2026 winners will be published September 22nd, 2026 on TFS annual ceremony.

The Foundation was made aware of an error on the general TFS Starting Grant page regarding the deadline for the TFS Staring Grant Call 2026. The correct deadline for the TFS Staring Grant Call 2026 is December 1st, 2025, as stated on the web page for this specific call (not February 2026). To compensate for this error and the confusion it may have caused, the Foundation offers an extension as described below: .

  • The applicants are given the possibility to send only the proposal abstract December 1st, 2025 (The applicants are of course also welcome to send the full prequalification application on December 1st)
  • The applicants should submit the full prequalification application no later than December 15th 2025
.
For those applicants that plan to take advantage of the opportunity to send only abstract on
December 1st, 2025, we ask the applicants to send the following information:
  • fill in the form below with title, date of birth, contact information and nominating department and faculty
  • proposal summary <approx. half a page > (The applicants may do minor changes in the proposal summary when submitting the full prequalification application)
  • list of cooperating partners in the project (role and commitment)
Based on this information the Foundation will start the process of recruiting external reviewers (with no conflict of interest) for evaluation of the proposal, and that the applicant is eligible to apply in according to the call. The Foundation want to complete the recruitment of referees before the full application is submitted December 15th, 2025.
