General information about the calls
In 2023, the Tromsø Research Foundation signed a collaboration agreement with its sister foundation in Bergen – the Trond Mohn Foundation – to carry out its own UiT initiative to support high-quality research projects at UiT. The Trond Mohn Foundation sets aside annual financial frameworks for the UiT initiative, and the Tromsø Research Foundation will identify and develop research projects worthy of support within this framework.
- Every two years, the foundation announces TFS Starting Grant (awarded in even-numbered years)
- Every two years, the foundation announces TFS Thematic Initiatives (awarded in odd-numbered years)
TFS Starting Grant
The application deadline for the TFS Starting Grant Call 2026 was December 1, 2025 – and evaluation work is currently underway. The award will be announced at the TFS Annual Celebration on September 22, 2026.

Thematic initiatives
TFS Thematic Initiatives 2027 has an application deadline for submission of project outlines (prequalification phase) on June 15, 2026.
